Usually pumps are either static, or centrifugal. The benefits of vacuum pumps, the most common device used by septage haulers, are: the liquid does not pass through the pipe, which eliminates wear; the pump is less likely to freeze; and the tank contents can be discharged under load. To avoid the aerosol dispersion, vacuum pumps should be fitted with a water block. Centrifugal pumps are more prone to clog and break more quickly through dust and dirt because the flow passes through the pipe. Centrifugal pumps for the treatment of solids are usually open-impeller or recessed-impeller. Both centrifugal pump types have a max. Suction lift of about 27 ft (8 m). Usually, the pump efficiency is at least 400 gal / min (1500 Umin). Hoses should be of black rubber or plastic substance with high vacuum, with a minimum diameter of 3 in. (8 centimetres). Hoses should also be capable of drainage and capsizing to reduce spillage. Usually, the haulers hold at least 100 feet (30 m) of hose. Discharge valves should be drip tight on the hauler trucks, and a discharge nipple should accommodate a quick-disconnect coupling. Other equipment includes a device to break the scum layer (e.g., a long-handled fork), a shovel, a soil probe to locate the septic tank, and other instruments to either measure accumulations or perform other field tasks. Mobile septage dewatering devices, which were originally built in Europe, are now accessible in USA. Septage is removed from the septic tank into one container on the truck for such systems; filtrate is added to the septic tank. During transition to a dewatering bath, where the solids are collected, polymer or lime is applied to the septage. With polymer and lime methods, a sludge solid content of 15 to 20% is generally possible, respectively, providing mobile dewatering solutions: reduced shipping costs due to fewer trips to the disposal site, higher truck capacity, smaller waste quantities needing more treatment and disposal. Such benefits are ideally applied to places with plenty of septic tanks and long distances to the site of discharge.
